Olympia was the most glorified sanctuary of ancient Greece dedicated to Zeus.
Olympia was called Altis, i.e. Sacred Grove and was built on the north bank of the river Alpheios.
There are traces of human presence from the Neolithic period. Initially there was a rural settlement that gradually developed into the largest religious center of the ancient world.
Ancient Olympia was the site of the Olympic Games, which were held as part of the Olympiad. There, for about a thousand years, stood the chryselephantine statue of Zeus, the work of Pheidias, which was known in antiquity as one of the seven wonders of the world. It was 12 m high and consisted externally of gold, ivory, silver, crystal and semi-precious stones, while its base, internally, was made of wood.
Games were held in the same place, much earlier, before the official start of the Olympic Games, because according to tradition the Games were started by Pelops, who won a chariot race against King Oinomaus of Pisa.
The official start of the Olympic Games is placed in 776 BC, when Lycurgus king of Sparta, Cleosthenes of Pisa and the king of Elis jointly organized the first Olympic Games, in honor of Zeus and decreed a "truce" of the wars against during the Olympic Games, using the burning of the Olympic Flame as a sign of the truce. It was then that the Olympic Games were held every four years.
In Ancient Olympia, the various religious and secular buildings were gradually erected until the 2nd century. A.D. the form it has today. The oldest building is the temple of Hera and the newest is Nymphaeum. In the Roman period, many buildings were completed and renovated, since the Romans continued the games without interruption.
The operation of the holy space continued normally during the first Christian years under Constantine the Great. In 393 AD the last Olympic Games took place and a little later the emperor of Byzantium, Theodosios I, with his decree definitively forbade their performance because they were considered pagan, while under Theodosius II, the final destruction of the sanctuary occurred (426 AD).
We will conclude the Ancient Olympia tour by taking you back to the site from which we picked you up in the morning of the same day.
